2,300 health inspectors step up festive season food checks

Colombo, Dec. 22 (Daily Mirror) - With the approach of the festive season, nearly 2,300 Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) and Administrative Public Health Inspectors have launched islandwide raids and inspections to ensure the availability of safe and quality food for consumers.

Health authorities said the special inspections are being carried out in view of recent heavy rainfall, which increases the risk of food contamination and spoilage. Legal action will be taken against traders who sell food items that are unfit for human consumption under such conditions.

The public has also been advised to remain vigilant when purchasing food, paying close attention to key details such as price, expiry date, date of manufacture, colour and overall quality of food items.

Authorities confirmed that legal action has already been initiated against several shops found selling food unfit for consumption as well as food prepared under unhygienic conditions.

The inspection programme will continue throughout the festive period to safeguard public health and prevent food-borne illnesses.
