A total of 168 rape cases of girls under the age of 16 have been reported in this country in September this year, MP Eran Wickramaratne said.

While addressing a committee meeting at the Colombo District Secretariat, he said 22 of them were pregnant.

According to the data from the Child Protection Authority, a total of 11,000 child abuse incidents were reported in Sri Lanka in 2021, the MP said.

At least 41% of all reported child abuse cases in 2022 fall under sexual abuse, he said.

When compared to the number of cases reported in September this year, that shows an increase, the MP added. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Sri lanka is truly part of the Indian subcontinent when it comes to institutionalized rape........at least these days it gets reported to police and even makes the papers. Interesting to compare with September rapes in 2000 to the present.

Top level politicians used to rape and do all barbaric acts and get away freely with support of top most politicians. This was ignored or encouraged by top level politicians and their children who went on raping and destroying innocent girls. They are responsible for spreading these barbaric acts.

Thank you Mr. Wickramaratne for pointing out this out. For many several medical organisations asked the government to liberalise the laws on abortion so that those who became pregnant after rape can receive abortion. But due to opposition from various religious bodies that proposal came to nothing. Please speak up on behalf of these rape victims. Thank you

This is a VERY SHOCKING RELEVATION. People should be educated about the LAW from childhood. Need to amend the law with higher fines and imprisonment. These cruel act will make TOURISTS TO THINK TWICE BEFORE COMING HETE. DOES NOT GOVT KNOW ABOUT THIS?

Women are vulnerable, they should be protected. Make prostitution legal, which prevails in many countries.

The 168 are rapes on under 16s in September 23. Wonder how many females of all ages were raped. I am sure most were committed by the scum boyfriend or a close relative or friend of the family. This despicable crime of the Male is a microcosm of the present Sri Lankan society alongside hacking, maiming, gunning down, robberies, deception and corruption. Change from top down is the need of the hour.

At least Rape has come out as a open issue to be discussed . I heard , correct me if I am wrong , that rape was hard to prove in court , for a terrified woman not fighting off the Criminal has no bruises to account for,and cannot prove that she was raped ..The stigma of been raped always comes back to the female and the family is silent .a woman suffers for being at the wrong place at the wrong time ...We have women's groups ..please take up the cause of your sisters .168 is only the number that dared ..a child born of rape is a child that would never know his /her father , a child never to know what family life is , may be ending up in an orphanage ..the sadness is harsh, a baby innocent but a tag attached . and they might shrug and say its Karma .

Moral values of society is comprised by many reasons. Surely as a country these type of rapes have had been occurring for many years. Is just ppl now are coming forward to record it. When mediocrity is encouraged, when corruption is encouraged from top to bottom, when race is used to gain vote, when the basic ethos of values ares compromised.... Nothing can be done. One can build hundreds of temples, churches, mosques... When The ones who enter are morally rotten.... U hear these unfortunate incidents....

All these rapists should be given capital punishment without delaying court proceedings. There must be separate courts to deal with this problem. An the punshment should be given within weeks not years. I hope rougues in the Parliment come to their senses!
