135 seized Indian fishing boats auctioned in Jaffna

The Navy has auctioned 135 Indian fishing boats that were seized for poaching Sri Lankan waters in the recent months.

A number of fishermen from different parts of the country participated at the auction which took place at the Karainagar harbour in Jaffna.

A 48-foot-long trawler fetched the highest price at the auction over Rs.1.3 million.

The auction was held in such a backdrop where Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin urged the Union government to prevail upon the Sri Lankan government to stop the auctioning of seized boats.

However, there have been incidents where Indian fishermen had attacked the local fishermen in the North and even caused damages to their fishing gears. (Romesh Madushanka)
