103 year-old woman killed in Balangoda

In an unfortunate incident, a 103-year-old woman died following an assault by a teenager in the Egoda-Weleboda area in Balangoda today, the Police said.

The Police said that the 15-year-old boy had assaulted the frail lady when she screamed seeing him making away with Rs.800 from her house.

She was living with one of her daughters and the daughter had gone to a nearby town when the incident happened, the Police said.

The deceased had been identified as H.M Somawathie (103). Police said that the old lady had gone out of the house to collect flowers to be offered during her evening prayers.

“When she returned to the house she has seen the young boy attempting to flee from the house with some money,” a spokesman for the Balangoda Police said.

“She had then screamed and the suspect had come towards her and assaulted her with a club,” he said.
