Colombo, Sept. 2 (Daily Mirror) - The first phase of the national programme 'Dream Destination', which aims to renovate 100 railway stations across the country, was launched today at the Talpe Railway Station under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena.

This initiative, implemented as a joint effort of the government, the private sector and the public, seeks to rebrand Sri Lanka’s railway stations with a modern identity that aligns with international standards, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

The Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, together with the Clean Sri Lanka programme and private sector contributions, will oversee the modernisation of 100 railway stations under this project.

Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena emphasised that revitalising the railway service is like awakening a 'sleeping giant,' highlighting the government’s commitment to transforming public transport into a high-quality service.

He further stated that the improvement of public transport would also boost the tourism industry and expressed confidence that, within the next two years, Sri Lanka would move toward rapid development as a nation built on hard work.

Before renovating stations renovate the lazy, corrupt, lethargic staff that man the entire railway service. Today we should have the best railways in SEA but alas our kalakani railway staff and those who were appointed to overlook the railways are fit to rob and cheat as far as the eye can see.

Even though i like train , i use bus to travel jaffna Colombo for following reason. 1. Buses are equipped with cctv. so i feel more secure there. 2. schedules are not convenient for working people. 3. Trains take more time compare to bus. make the night train as a intercity express. i am sure lot of people have same reason. if you do these it will bring more profit.

They need to double track up to Jaffna for faster service. There should be hourly train services between Jaffna and Colombo given the vital connectivity between the 2 cities

Renovating the stations a good idea. But punctuality of train service is much more important. Also try to eliminate train derailment, Coz that will effect line closures for days.
