Public servants are paid a very low salary. Basic salaries for SLAS starts at 21000, for degree holders it starts at 16700, for teachers 15000, for clerks (management assistants) it is 14000, for office assistants and drivers it is much more lower. The only allowance most of them get is the Cost of Living Allowance of 5000. Other than that, over time duties are available only at a few selected departments like postal and railways. Only SLAS level officers get other benefits like vehicle permits. How could a person be expected to work all day and take this meagre pay and keep a family? Everyone is quick to point out the weaknesses of the public service but no one sees the hardships they bear in the service for the people.

That is because there are too many people in the public service doing too little work. Prune the service, increase productivity and efficiency and then they can be paid more. At the moment most of the laziests in this country jump for govt jobs because that means they can sit around doing nothing while getting paid something and then getting a pension at the end of it.
