President orders tighter security

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered th police to step up security ahead of the presidential elections after a second political activist was shot dead this month, an official said Sunday. He is also appealing to all parties to ensure there is no violence.

A private bus which was traveling from Jaffna to Colombo had overturned after going off road and hitting a tree early this morning in Vavuniya. The driver of the bus and a passenger was killed, while nine other passengers including a woman were injured.

A 31-year-old man has been charged with murdering his neighbour from Sri Lanka in north London. Ugarajan Swaminathan, a 34-year-old Tamil, died in hospital on Wednesday after a disturbance at his flat in Station Road, Harrow, the British media reported today.
