The old De Soyza building, located on Malay Street in Slave Island, which was of archeological value, collapsed last night, police said.

The building is reported to have been over 200 years old and had been left abandoned for a while.

Police said the owner of the building had previously requested for permission to demolish the building but this was denied by the Archeological Department.

Police said no injuries had been reported but the area has been cordoned off.(DSB)

The Department of Archaeology was more concerned about letting the building stand rather than the safety of the people. Typical state sector mentality.

I suppose the owners want the entire building to collapse at night so that they can build a high-rise to get more income.

What would you do if that is your property? That place is not an old delepeted building to stand for the sake of people who frequent the area.

Moiez Mohamed Friday, 18 June 2021 07:14 AM

China is happy now, they will make some apartments and they will name the street as chinese street.
