No decision has been taken to declare April 15 as a public holiday, Home Affairs State Minister Ashoka Priyantha said.

He said requests have been made by state officials and public to declare April 15 as a public holiday because of the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

He told the Daily Mirror that he will discuss the matter with the ministers and President at the Cabinet meeting.

However, no decision has yet been taken to announce April 15 as a public holiday.

Since AVURUDU is a National Festival, the Public Servants deserve an extra holiday. They also work "HARD" when they go to office. Government will NO lose anything giving an extra day off.

You may declare it as anyway you won't get anything done from these fellows

As if SL jokers dont have enough holidays. Whether they are working or on holidays, it doesn't make an iota of a difference.

Yes that is why our productivity is so high. Even when they have their naps during working hours, they are working in their dreams. We are so fortunate living in our miracle of Asia.

Whether Holiday or Not, OUTCOME identical!!

Four continuous holidays (from 11 th to 14 th) and some people asking for more. I am sure that many public servants will not report for work from 08 th April to 10 th April as well. So why ask for even more. It is absurd.

Shame on state officials to make such a request. The country is lagging behind the world. USA has only 11 public holidays a year declared by the federal government. UK 8 to 10, Canada and Australia 10. Meanwhile Sri Lanka has 25, Iran 26, Myanmar 32, Nepal 30, Bangladesh and Egypt 22. Compare their development and economies.

Exactly. You look at all those countries with so many holidays, it is little wonder they are all basket cases. Stupidity gone mad in this country. Also full of religious fanatics resulting in so many religion based holidays every month.

Yes of cause they deserve an extra holiday for the way they work.. surely working hard. U walk into a government office after 2.45 pm and u will see the way they work

Everything is in a Mess... No one uttered a word for a Bank Holiday Not being declared on 5th February though it was 'LEGAL' to declare an in-lieu Holiday according to the Shop and Office Act in Sri Lanka.

Government has no business to declare April 15 a PH. If declared PH, then government is spoiling the already spoiled people. Whoever wants to stay at home can apply for annual leave.

    Chandrika g Wednesday, 10 April 2024 12:15 AM

Well, some countries have a four day week, its ok if people are productive on the days they do work. But is that the case? To thine own self be true.
