Colombo, July 3 (Daily Mirror) - The Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) raised serious concerns over the lack of progress in the investigations into the tragic suicide of 15-year-old Dilshi Amshika, a Grade 10 student of Ramanathan Hindu Ladies' College in Bambalapitiya.
Addressing the media during a protest held in front of the Police Headquarters in Colombo today, CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin alleged that the police had failed to take meaningful action in the case, despite several high-level discussions and public outrage.
Dilshi Amshika took her own life at her residence in Kotahena on April 29, 2025, following allegations of sexual abuse by her former mathematics teacher in October 2024.
Stalin pointed out that, after the incident came to light, a meeting was convened at Temple Trees involving the Education Minister, the Women and Child Affairs Minister, Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, and the Health Minister to expedite investigations.
However, he claimed that no significant action had followed.
He further revealed that while an interim report was submitted by a committee appointed by the Education Ministry and the Secretary to the Public Administration Ministry, its recommendations were ignored.
“The male teacher was merely sent on compulsory leave without suspension, and no action has been taken against the private tuition teacher allegedly involved in the case,” Stalin said.
The CTU also expressed concern that at least eight teachers who had received transfer orders over the past decade were still serving at Ramanathan Hindu Ladies' College, disregarding directives from the authorities.
Stalin urged that all necessary actions be completed before the case is taken up before court on July 7.
