IGP Pujith Jayasundara, who was arrested this morning for allegedly threatening and intimidating a lift operator at the police headquarters in 2017, was released on bail by Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayaka this afternoon.
Mr Jayasundara, who was sent on compulsory leave, was arrested by the CID after he was summoned to give a statement over the incident, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.
He was released on a surety bail of Rs. 200,000 after being produced in the Fort Magistrate’s Court.
The CID launched an investigation after the lift operator, who is a police officer and a resident of Ragama, lodged a complaint on June 2 this year with the Acting IGP.
In his complaint, the police officer alleged that IGP Jayasundera on April 11, 2017, scolded him in foul language, grabbed him by the collar and attempted to assault him in the elevator. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
