Most parents struggle and do what it takes to have children become achievers in the world. From excelling in the academic field to sports and other extracurricular activities, our attention focuses on these areas. If these are not monitored, controlled and limited, the result could be a burnout. There could be more damage than good. Our humanity was not made to take on such long-drawn pressures of performance and competition.

The real need is to be creative. Creativity is the art of being able to think differently. Think ‘out of the box,’ as one would say. This would mean to look challengingly at the accepted norms and concepts of what we have taken for granted. These are moments which the children have to discover for themselves. Moments, when not only children, but parents as well, need to follow in today’s world. It is not cessation of any activity, rather an observation of our thoughts. It would be quite interesting to see, how we look at self when people interact with us. We could identify our feelings of joy and peacefulness, or our reactions of anger, hurt and bitterness. One could call it a type of meditation to know the truth of one’s self. This would become a creative act within, to enrich one’s mind and body and give it life.

Most parents may not realise that the family is the cradle of sustenance and well-being, which grows even into the next generation. This way, even nations would stand to reap a harvest. Dependence on academic, sports or other extracurricular activities alone would be not beneficial, if quiet moments within family are sacrificed. Spending time creatively with family is an activity we seem to have lost along the way. Time tables need to be adjusted to include time with family. Just being together in silence, intimacy or rest has become a challenge that needs to be accepted. We may face the boundary of one another’s closed hearts and minds. Yet in our struggle just being there together, would carry us beyond borders, to discover treasures in one another.

It’s said that most parents try their best to avoid arguments. Spouses and children slam doors to avoid rows. They consider it's a waste of time. Yet studies have shown that what goes on in family is actually a training ground. One another’s point of view needs be brought out and not stifled. This brings out maturity, confidence and understanding. May we take time then today to touch, smell, listen and see the beauty of the environment we find ourselves living in.
