Power and political glory are transient

Much has been spoken these days about the separation of powers among the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary. There could however, always be a strong underlying urge in our human nature to want absolute power. This could be due to our faulty psychic condition that breathes primordial selfishness that we have been living on from times past.

People have always been seeking freedom from fear, insecurity and unhappiness. We believe that if we are powerful enough we could get others to acknowledge our superiority, power and importance. This way we probably think we could get a boost to our egos, little realising that the brokenness and woundedness of self needs inner healing. No amount of praises we seek or even receive could compensate for the loneliness and fear that lie buried deep within ourselves. Many great celebrities who have glowed in the hall of fame have had to be sedated in some form or other with many dying unfulfilled, lonely and in misery.

Not only we but all the nations of the world need not political rulers but those who can meet the needs of human hearts and troubled minds. A political authority would often be open to the temptation of seeking personal glory that leads to self-destruction. An authority that has concern only for deep lurking fears and endless struggles in the vast mass of human existence would stand to be a genuine leader and authority.

The Executive and Parliament have only one way of proving their right to destiny. Are they strong enough to be free in their hearts to even allow the Judiciary to literally breathe down their necks. We could say this whole issue the world is looking at is an opportunity to showcase the healthy attitude of the powers that be.
Failure to live up to this crucial moment of history would create a situation akin to the horror of someone like Adolf Hittler.

The Judiciary is the last resort of the oppressed and of those unfairly treated. Yet many are the instances of litigants having to wait sometimes for decades for determination of their cases, spending wasted hours and enormous amounts on litigation. Remand prisoners wait indefinitely in overcrowded prisons; probably innocent at times yet made to carry the stigma of being condemned in the absence of judicial processes. The judiciary can experience what people go through. For example the Supreme Court and the Bar Council said it would be prudent for the Parliamentary Select Committee to postpone its sittings till the Supreme Court gives a ruling on the constitutional validity of its inquiry. But the Speaker ruled against it and the inquiry continues. Lessons learnt: All the arms of governance need to be compassionate and liberate the people, for whom they exist.
