A research carried out by the Coast Conservation Department (CCD) has revealed that the sea belt along the Negombo, Mt.Lavinia and Polhena areas are polluted with human excreta. Director General of Coast Conservation Department- Prabath Chandrakeerthi said that, according to the accepted percentage , it was possible that the sea water could be mixed with a quantity of 0.003 % waste matter. However, it had been revealed that a quantity of 0.3% waste matter existed in the water in the above mentioned coastal areas.
The research had been carried out covering the coastal areas from Mirissa to Negombo.He said that as a result of human excreta mixing with the sea water, tourism and fishery industry would be severely affected as there were possibilities of the people residing in those regions contracting various diseases by consuming sea food that were caught from the waters in
those seas.
