One died and 29 others were injured when two buses transporting a group of individuals from Colombo to the Sampur quarantine centre collided head-on with a lorry near the Warakapola Post Office on the Colombo- Kandy main road on Wednesday evening.
The driver of the lorry died and 29 passengers in one of the buses were injured and admitted to Warakapola Hospital. The deceased Aberatnage Denzil Ranasinghe (34) was a resident of Horagollewa in Dambulla. Three naval personnel were among those injured.
The navy was transporting 100 individuals to the Sampur quarantine centre in four buses when one of the buses that veered off the road collided head-on with the lorry and toppled. Another bus that followed bumped into the lorry and the bus that toppled.
Several individuals to be quarantined had fled from the scene only to be arrested in a short while by the police.
