The Cabinet at its meeting chaired by President Maithripala Sirisena is reported to have yesterday scrapped the National Economic Council (NEC) set up by President Maithripala Sirisena.
The NEC headed by Prof. Lalith Samarakoon was set up by the President after he faulted the Cabinet Committee on Economic Management (CCEM) headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and set out to abolish it in March. The NEC which was under the supervision of the President was meant to have played a role in economic policy making.
