February 2021 Sri Lanka witnessed the creation of its youngest diver when 10-year-old Amber Matarage got her PADI license in Unawatuna, Galle.
Amber is no stranger to the sea. Having grown up on the bay, her parents who own two boutique hotels in Unawatuna, were instrumental in encouraging her love for swimming and diving from a very early age. Amber trained with experienced diving instructor Shirley Koralage who runs the popular Submarine diving school, as well as her father who is also a licensed diver and her No 1 fan.
Amber is a student of the British School, Colombo and plans to pursue a career in Marine Biology. She is a bright, headstrong and courageous young girl who is sure to excel in all her future endeavours. Whilst Amber is extremely modest about this huge achievement, she is a role model for all young girls in Sri Lanka who wish to follow their dreams and succeed in their chosen careers.
