Rathana Thera submits bill to repeal MMDA

Parliamentarian Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera today presented a bill calling for repeal of the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA), No 13 of 1951.

He submitted the bill by way of a private member's motion titled, "Muslim Marriage and Divorce (Repeal) Bill, seeking to repeal the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA), No 13 of 1951.

Meanwhile, UNP MP Thusitha Wijemanna presented a private member's bill to introduce the minimum age of marriage in Sri Lanka.

The Bill noted that both parties should have completed eighteen years of age at the time of marriage and noted that child marriage shall be punishable with rigorous imprisonment not exceeding two years and a fine not exceeding Rs.100, 000. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Sad to see SL is moving away from ground reality. The first sexual experience age as per global trends have reduced and we wanted the marriageable age to increase. Please check hospital records how many women below 18 have given birth. The problem not in the law, changing lifestyle which the religious leaders should address without just bringing in laws to show the world.

Have you studied the Muslim law before presenting this bill ? The law should be amended but its should come from a committee of Muslim representatives, consultation with All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulamas.

Ravaya published a well researched article on this subject on 2019 Aug.23 by Indunil Usgoda Arachchi. 2416 Sinhala and 494 Muslim girls below 15 years we married in 2012. But 74076 Sinhala and 12460 Muslim 15 to 19 year girls were legally married. Who needs protection? Rev. Rathana please keep your house in order, before barging into Muslim matters.

Hi Fayal if you ask these Muslim groups who is run by only men they will not allow this change as most of them are guilty of that. If Muslims live in western countries and other Asian countries including India this law is not allowed. If you want this to happen I suggest these people should go and live in a Muslim countries. No problems and that will save the young Sinhalese girls age 13 who have been seduced by the Muslim old men. Please leave this Sinhala Buddhist country to us and we will manage it without these extremists.

Rohana Nimal, it’s very obvious that your real concern is Singhalese girls converting to Islam for any reason. If there weren’t any Singhalese girl converting to Islam, this would have been a non-topic for you. Perhaps it is from men like you, those Singhalese girls want to get away.
