The Grade 5 Scholarship Examination would not be compulsory anymore and the relevant circular had been issued, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

However, he said the exam would be held annually as an examination to grant scholarships for those students belonging to low-income families and as an exam.

According to the circular 08/2019, no student could be forced to sit for the exam.

President Maithripala Sirisena recently said that the Government had decided to cancel the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination saying that the exam was an undue pressure on Grade five children.
