The Government had approved to import 6, 000 metric tons of Basmati rice annually under the provisions of Pakistan-Sri Lanka Trade Agreement, Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said.
He said the private sector has also been permitted to import Basmati Rice under this provision.
However, complaints have been received regarding various irregularities in the importation of rice committed by rice importers which did not adhere to prescribed regulations.

Basmati Rice??? This is a type of luxury rice and not a version for the medium or low class citizens of this country. What a waste of foreign exchange!!! Rajapakse waste has already started.

Sri Lanka should be the country that can export rice and not import rice. Why not cultivate Basmti rice in Sri Lanka. It can help local farmers.

Who eats basmati? The poor, the middle class or the super rich? Perhaps the government does not know as to who elected them. Or do they?
