Following the report issued by the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT), examiners said the chassis numbers of 10 motorbikes out of the 26 which were apprehended by the Mirihana police last Sunday (6) were changed, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
He said those Motorbikes were examined by the DMT examiner at the Mirihana police premises.
The bikes were taken into police custody during a raid, immediately after the fatal accident that snatched the lives of a seven-year-old child and a one-year-old toddler at Egoda Uyana on the Panadura-Moratuwa Road last Friday (December 4).
26 young riders who rode recklessly on high powered racing motorcycles with engines tuned beyond the legal cylinder capacity, were arrested by the Mirihana Police on Sunday (6).
The motorcyclists were arrested while riding on roads around Parliament and Madiwela causing a great deal inconvenience to the residents and pedestrians.
The police believe those motorbikes were locally-assembled, will be sent to the Government Analysis Department for further clarifications, and charges would be filed against those riders accordingly.
Meanwhile, a special police operation is underway during the night to apprehend these illegal riders, DIG Rohana said.
