The police sergeant who was interdicted after his assault on a woman in Ratnapura town was videoed and uploaded to social websites has been exonerated.
Police Sergeant Prasanna Tissera was allowed to return to work on the order of Senior DIG (Sabaragamuwa) and posted to the Avissawella Police Station on Sunday.During investigations held by two separate teams, eyewitnesses had given evidence describing the police officer’s conduct as proper in controlling a quarrel that had taken place between two women who were scolding each other using indecent words in public.
Some witnesses had also said that one woman had attempted to attack the police officer with a piece of metal.
According to the police, the person who had released the video to the social website has now left the area.
The video is due to be sent to a university for examination to see whether it had been faked.
Recently a protest was held in Ratnapura Town calling for the reinstatement of the interdicted police sergeant.
Meanwhile, the woman who was assaulted has filed a case in the Supreme Court claiming Rs.50 million as compensation.
