UNF Parliamentary Group yesterday approved the appointment of Ranjith Madduma Bandara as the General Secretary of the new alliance and to register it under a new name and a symbol.
Madduma Banadara’s name was proposed by MP Ashok Abeysinghe and seconded by Thushara Indunil. However the appointment will have to be approved by the UNP working committee. The former accepted this and said it would be approved by the working committee.
Later he told a press conference that the name and the symbol of the new alliance would be decided during the coming days and would be registered with the Elections Commission. Also he said those who were removed from the UNP working committee will be reappointed in time to come.
Asked about the UNP leadership, the MP said it is not important now as the party is going to contest the general elections as an alliance.
The group meeting was a lengthy affair with several MPs including Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa who were at the chair, Ravi Karunanayake, Sujeewa Senasinghe, Harshana Rajakaruna, Ajith P. Perera and Eran Wickramaratne voicing their opinion.
