The previous government that bought an aircraft on a monthly lease of USD 585,000 from an airline in Portugal is not airworthy as brought to the notice of Civil Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga by trade union leaders yesterday.
The minister inspected the aircraft and instructed the airline authorities to repair it. However, SriLankan Airlines CEO Vipula Gunaratne said repairing had already started.
It transpired at this meeting that the accumulated loss of the airline between 2005 and 2015 stood at Rs.76 billion. However, it had suffered a loss of Rs.119 billion from 2015 to 2019.
