The ongoing slaughter of buffaloes in the World Heritage Knuckles Range has been reported by the people of the area. They pointed out that offal of slaughtered buffaloes had been left by jungle tracks in the Pitawala Pathana and the Riverston areas.
They said an organised gang had been carrying on the racket unchecked. A farmer said his buffaloes let loose for grazing into the forest after ploughing had been slaughtered recently.
Meanwhile, Zonal Forest Conservator M. C. Ilukkumbura said he had received information on the incident and that it would be investigated soon. He said several peole poaching in the Knuckles Range had been arrested and legal action taken.
