The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday directed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandra Wickramaratne to remove Peliyagoda Police from conducting investigations into the alleged assault on law student Migara Gunaratne and refer it to another special investigation unit.
When the case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Bandara Nelumdeniya, President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris who appeared for Migara Gunaratne requested the Court to remove it from the Peliyagoda Police and assign it to another unit.
President’s Counsel Tirantha Walaliyadda who appeared for the Police also made the same request and informed the Court to hand over the investigation to another unit in order to conduct it in an impartial and independent manner.
After considering the facts presented by both parties, the Additional Magistrate ordered the case to be called back on March 15.
