The 1996 World champions needed two wins in the five-match series to secure a place in the ICC’s pinnacle 50-over event, which will take place from 30 May to 15 July in the United Kingdom. The top seven ODI sides apart from host England as on 30 September qualify directly.

But with India taking a 4-0 lead, Sri Lanka will now have to wait for the Windies to lose at least one of its upcoming matches to be able to clinch that berth.

If Sri Lanka wins the last match of the series on Sunday, it will reach 88 points on the points table but that will not be enough to ensure it automatic qualification.

The Windies will be able to overtake Sri Lanka in such a scenario since it can also reach 88 points and edge Sri Lanka on decimal points if it wins its upcoming six matches – one against Ireland on 13 September and all ODIs of a five-match series against England from 19 to 29 September.

In case Sri Lanka loses the series 5-0, the Windies will be able to overtake it by beating Ireland and winning either all five matches against England or the last four matches for a 4-1 series win.

Teams not getting direct places in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 will get another shot through a Qualifying tournament.

The ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 will feature the bottom four sides from the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings, the top four sides from the ICC World Cricket League Championship and the top two sides from the ICC World Cricket League. The top two sides from the World Cup Qualifier will complete the 10-team line-up for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

Dont lay the 100% blame on coaches and administrators. It is a 50% -50% breakup. The present cricketers think cricket is a ticket for money, houses, cars and business together with loads of show off and high handness. They have forgotten the word PRIDE and the moment of playing for the national side. Previous money minded cricketers who negotiated business deals while on overseas tours are to blame. They passed the message that all is MONEY. The young ones learnt fast. See how many past so called greats have major export/import trades with countries they visited on tours.

They should lose to the minnows and sit out an entire world cup. Then they will realize thier posh cars and fancy watches mean nothing especially when the public frown on them. Country first and money second. What has happened is the other way around. Cricket is a great leveller. The pig headed non performers will be cut to size. I am happy it happened this way. There should be a limit to cheating us always.

Feel it always better not to participate next world cup since English media will humiliates us badly.

The Sri Lankan blood Bangladesh cricket coach Hathurusinghe learnt his trade under former Sri Lanka coach Australian Trevor Bayliss who also helped England defeat his own countrymen in the ashes.

SL does not deserve to be in the world cup and the Windies should play instead. Our overpaid cricketers will not be able to defeat an Indian 'C' team, the team should be fined for poor performances. Thank god the Selectors resigned it is now the time that the office bearers too resigned.

Something is suspicious here. After SL gave away the match to Pak in UK to defeat India in the finals, it was expected of SL to lose to India here.

    mohammed Saturday, 02 September 2017 09:30 AM

Well done SL, you don't deserve to be in the world cup.. How can you play in the world cup when you have monkeys playing cricket ! disgraceful, no discipline whats so ever!give up cricket and play foot ball , for foot ball I doubt either !

When signing future contracts with our cricketers a condition should be clearly laid that packages will be considered only on the past performances during last 12 months. it is very clear Cricketers are not bothered at all whether they win or lose matches as they get a thumping package. Everyone should share the blame of this disgrace. Politicians, Administrators of Cricket, Managers, coaching staff and the players; and its not just the current bunch, but all of them who had been there for at least the past five years. I guess it is natural for all teams to have a bad run for one, two years. However, our team has been going down for last few years and turning point is nowhere to be seen.Hope I am wrong.

    Jason Saturday, 02 September 2017 03:46 PM

    hahahahaha! perfect ending.

We still are No.8 ahead or WI. Its just a temporary stage and we would certainly rise up at the right time.
