National Zoological Gardens Department Director General Anura de Silva This Open Air Zoo has been constructed targeting the tourism industry. De Silva said the construction of the open-air zoo commenced in 2000. "It was stopped in 2002 and construction started officially in 2008. The open air zoo in 44 acres has been constructed adjacent to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage," he said.
