These pictures were taken at an international surfing event held in Sri Lanka's eastern coastal resort of Arugambay on September 3, 2011. The event saw surfers from the UK, USA, Australia, Netherlands, South Africa, France, Japan and Brazil. The competition aims to promote as a major tourist attraction the country's east once plagued by the war. (Pix by Kithsiri De Mel)

If we are trying to make Arugam bay a world class surfing area. Then we need to clean the beaches and get rid of all the shanties and dirt on the beaches otherwise it would die a natural death. Just compare our beaches with other great surfing areas of Hawaii, South Africa, South Australia etc. we feel far short of these in cleanliness.
