The train services on the Colombo-Batticaloa railway line were disrupted till this morning because of a collision with a herd of elephants at Pillayaradi in Welikanda yesterday, Police said.
Wildlife officials said one elephant had died while some of the elephants which were injured had fled in the direction of the Maduru-Oya sanctuary.
They said the collision had taken place at one of the main elephant crossings in the area and that last year five elephants had died in a similar collision. Pix by Nimal Jayarathne

Train accidents killing elephants at elephant crossings are rather common in such places. Government is yet to take proper actions to save elephants from these train accidents by building underpass for the elephants to move from place place safely without crossing over rail tracks.
