The government has approved a proposal by a private company to set up a US $ 50 million cable car project in Nuwara Eliya, targeting both local and foreign tourists.
The project has been proposed by Outdoor Engineering Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd and its foreign partner Doppelmayr Cable Car GmbH, a company headquartered in
Wolfurt, Austria.
The project, to be built on 21 towers, will link Nuwara Eliya Race Course and Gregory Lake with the Nanu Oya railway station and Single Tree Hill. The project will consist of 86 cable cars, each with the capacity for 10 persons and the first phase of the project will install 43 cars. The Cabinet of Ministers gave the approval this week to set up a project with the Board of Investment facilities, for a proposal submitted by Plantations Industries Minister Navin Dissanayake.
