Voting underway peacefully

Voting in the 2014 Uva Provincial Council Election to elect 32 members is now underway and ends at 4 this evening.

Tight security is in place for the polls with over 12, 000 police personnel including STF.

Nearly 617 candidates from 22 political parties and 11 independent groups are vying for 32 slots in the Badulla and Monaragala Districts while 609,966 voters from the Badulla District and 332,764 voters from the Monaragala District are eligible to cast their vote.

Meanwhile, police said no election violence has been reported so far and voting was under way peacefully.
