The Ceylon Teachers Union today called for the suspension of all Advanced Level results that were issued. Speaking to Daily Mirror online Treasurer of the Union H.D. NIshantha said that the Government is currently playing with the lives of innocent children."The Advanced Level exam is the most decisive exam for any student having toiled for 13 years in school. They have currently made a mess of the whole results with total disregard to the lives of the children. For those authorities this might be just another job but for the student its the most important moment in his life, having witnessed the mess that they have made we call for a complete suspension of all results and want the authorities to completely re evaluate the results that were issued." he said.
Speaking on behalf of the Union the Treasurer further went on to point out that the authorities continuously misled the public and the students. "We had a minister stating one thing and the head of the department of examination stating another, it was contradiction all along," he said.
The Treasurer went on to state that they have received complaints from all over the island regarding the inaccuracy of results. "For example the results that were issued to Nalanda College were revoked after a few hours, some schools didn't receive any result, there are many instances where students have received results for subjects they were not candidates for, then there is the main issue of the rankings and the Z-score being mixed up," he said.
Responding to the remarks made by the examination commissioner who earlier in the day said that the rankings wont have any bearing on University entrance, Nishantha said, "Why did they issue rankings if they were of no purpose? They are trying to make this whole issue non significant, it is not only the rankings like I pointed out before, all of the results have been made a mess of, it's unbelievable how in an era of technology the 'Department of Examination' can brush off this issue."
He went on to assert that the main reason behind this fiasco is the fact that the government did not have a comprehensive policy when introducing the two syllabuses. "The problem regarding the two syllabuses and the ensuing complexity when it came to results was obvious from the moment a new syllabus was introduced, what were these people doing all this time without formulating a method to incorporate results?" he asked. All Z scores were calculated wrongly in 2011 examinations by the examinations department. Correct method of calculating Z score is by calculating Z score for each examination paper. Each subject had two different sets of papers. Raw marks of two different sets of literature papers cannot be taken together for calculation of Z score for literature. Z score for each subject comes from the raw marks of the same examination. Raw marks of totally different examinations cannot be mixed on a one list to calculate Z score for that subject. Z Sores for each paper need to be calculated independently. Then the average of three papers for three subjects comes as the correct Z score for the candidate. If the methodology is incorrect results were wrong. Complete reevaluation of z scores would help correct this disorderly chaotic situation prevailing in the examination results.
