The traffic lane law would be strictly implemented starting today especially along the Sri Jayewardenepura Road from Jayanthipura to Colombo, the Police said yesterday.

Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said extra Police officers would be deployed to oversee that the law was being implemented and that drivers follow the rule from 6 a.m. today.

“The law will also be implemented on the entrance roads to Colombo. We expect to file cases against those who drive carelessly neglecting the traffic lane law and also jaywalkers. We will file more cases in court against these people with intention of reducing traffic and road accidents,” he said.

The day when the Police will be able to successfully implement this rule with motor cyclists, three wheelers and private buses, then we can have a sigh of relief believing our traffic Police has done something worthwhile.

If and when it happens, the sun will rise from the west and set in the east in Sri Lanka.

ANOTHER TYPE OF POCKET MONEY FOR POLICEMEN.

    BuffaloaCitizen Thursday, 26 November 2015 09:38 AM

It all starts with a big bang and after a few days the police are sleeping. This law shud not only be implemented to road that connect to Parliament (to make ministers comfortable) but also on Galle Road, Kandy Road, Negombo Road and so on. Further, the main culprits are Bus Drivers and 3-wheelers.

    Withana Thursday, 26 November 2015 03:17 PM

Just like the Seat belt rule we should accommodate this. Things can only get better.Everyone will get less angrier when a tuk bugger cuts you off. And then you go home and shout at your kids and wife, treat office colleagues bad because you had a bad day at work... just to take out the stress. It happens. No one cares about stupid opinions. As a driver, I would love to drive decently. Only aholes will disagree with this rule.

    LF Thursday, 26 November 2015 10:13 AM

Please start with indisciplined Three Wheelers, Motor Cyclist and stop Jay Walking on Main Roads, which are main contributors for Traffic snarls and even motor accidents in the city and suburbs. Why only Parliament Road? What about other approach roads to Colombo like Galle Road, Highlevel Road, Kandy and Negombo Roads?

    Ranjith Thursday, 26 November 2015 10:52 AM

Equal importance should be given to maintain rural Tanks and irrigation systems and repairing rural roads and bridges which are in a deplorable state. Otherwise this govt. will also be doing the same mistake done by MRs Govt. Ranjith

Was this in the budget proposals?

    nan Thursday, 26 November 2015 10:58 AM

this is a very good move should have done long time back. but pl; get the trishaws and the private busses to observe this rule irst

Hailing from the islands best known driving school that has given many hundred thousand a scientific driver training till the late nineties, I must say that keeping in lane is nothing new. I have taught the highway code at a time (1960 to 1970) when a road had three imaginative unmarked lanes. The parking lane on the left, the driving lane in the middle of the left half and the overtaking lane more to the middle. All drivers to be were taught well to use hand signals before changing lanes.I was in Sri Lanka recently driving in Colombo for which one needs good nerves. Due to my over 40 years of intensive european driving experience I kept to all the common rules of the road and went with the flow as I would put it.Where the law needs to be strictly imposed is to withdraw the driving licences of any risky driver who puts other in danger without any warnings. This should be announced publicly in all media so that it does not come as a surprise.

    JayWalker Thursday, 26 November 2015 10:59 AM

Will these rules be applicable to Tuk Tuks and Private buses as well or are they exempted?

anawud anahaw Thursday, 26 November 2015 11:00 AM

This could be good if implemented but what about the drivers who stall on roads and drive slower than required Firstly get the Bus drivers in to orderStop the bribing menace that follows the Bus drivers who simply pay the office and walk away instead of a legal fine there are many (ladies included) who are poor drivers and block the way for someone who may be within speed limit but yet driving faster than others..

    Jay Thursday, 26 November 2015 11:00 AM

Mr. Minister -Pl; get the airhorns in busses removed and also the noice making exhaust pipes in trishaws also removed.

    Chaminda Thursday, 26 November 2015 04:32 PM

And disco lights irritating drivers behind

    Ajantha Thursday, 26 November 2015 04:41 PM

Excellent move, however Three Wheelers, Motor Cyclists and private bus drivers are main culprits and there must be separate police unit to make sure the compliance and violators must be heavily fined!!!

    Nujra Thursday, 26 November 2015 04:49 PM

Lane discipline should be implemented on all roads at all times. This is but a basic rule of driving.

    MSN Thursday, 26 November 2015 11:09 AM

Applies only to the ordinary person. All powerfull and wealthy people are exempted from this rule.

    Citizen Thursday, 26 November 2015 05:09 PM

Make short educational video clips ( about 15 seconds) on road manners and broadcast over electronic media twice per hour.

    smith Thursday, 26 November 2015 11:14 AM

very good move hope it will be done throughout. also see if you can implement left lane policy for busses, 3wheelers and motor cyclist, the last 2 are a real menace, the govt should have imposed higher taxes on those 2 categories and not the electric cars

    Damith Sunday, 29 November 2015 10:01 AM

Three wheelers and heavy vehicles in the same lane? This is madness. Threewheelers should be in the same lane as cars and motorcycles and not allowed to change lanes.

    gerard Thursday, 26 November 2015 11:47 AM

Today I was on the specified roads..but no extra Police to be seen...whatever the Police decide to do ..it will only be for a day or 2 and there after back to ...as usual

Fazlan Ismail Thursday, 26 November 2015 12:13 PM

To the those Implementing the Law,I think fining people and filing law suites against drivers or pedestrians do not solve the root cause to these issues. I think it all starts at the point of issuing licence. How strict or how rigorous is our license issuing process? Our drivers are the least trained. They no sense or knowledge of road rules. Specially with regards to parking, sticking to the lanes, lane changing etc. I think the mindset of the driver needs to corrected right from the beginning. Also another factor is our roads - Poorly designed. The roads from bamba through towards dehiwela which was recently redone should have ideally been expanded into 4 lane roads. Fining drivers is fine if all these have been put in place. Look at countries like the UAE and learn how stringently they provide licensing...Ensures total driving discipline.

    sajith Thursday, 26 November 2015 12:46 PM

This is a good move. In the same time police should also pay attention on the drivers who are blocking flow of traffic by driving very slow in fast traffic lanes. Not only 3-wheelers, other drivers also does the same.

    RK Thursday, 26 November 2015 12:56 PM

This should be applicable to all the roads. Further it is not practical to deploy police officers to monitor this instead of fixing some traffic cameras to do so. Also, when there is a right turn, the road should have an extended lane for those vehicles close to the turn to let the vehicles going straight to have a smooth flow. However since this is a infrastructure development it may take time to complete it but it should be started now.Traffic lights also should be timed accordingly.
