Separate company to handle Halal certificates

A A A

The All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) said today it would no longer issue Halal certificatesandthat a separate company would take over the operations with regard to audits and compliance.

In amedia release issued today the body of Muslim clerics said it had taken this decision, “to facilitate the national need for contributing towards social cohesion and Sri Lanka's economic development.”

Following is the full statement:

ACJU stops to issue Halaal certificates, separate company to take over operations.

The All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) announces that their Division for Halaal Certification will stop to issue certificates effective 31't December 2013 while a separate company limited by guarantee founded by reputed, respected professionals in Sri Lanka will be managing compliance audits and certification.

This development comes as a result of the Expressions of Interest called from the public to facilitate the national need for contributing towards social cohesion and Sri Lanka's economic development.

The role of ACJU in the future with regard to Halaal compliance audits and certifications would be, in providing consultations on any technicalities of the concept of Halaal compliance, as a social obligation and responsibility towards the Sri Lankan society while facilitating global requirements.

The process that originated few months ago, after consultations with various stakeholders, authorities and civil society representatives, the need for allowing an independent entity in the form of a company limited by guarantee, to facilitate this was deemed appropriate. The new company is expected to carry out compliance validation processes on request to meet both local consumer demands as well as international exports pre-requisites, similar to several other consumer good certifications currently available in Sri Lanka.

A transition plan is already in place for interested companies and existing firms to be introduced to the new entity; based on requests from the commercial establishments.{jcomments off}

This" halaal" is for Muslims community in the world,it is applicable only for Muslims,if you are opposing, you can choose without" halaal" freely available in the market. this is the rights of Muslims on this world, nobody can object it,only Sri Lankan Bhuddist in the world created a issue.

Respective companies should decide whether or not to use Halal certificate or not. Nobody is forcing them to have halal certification. In the same way, people can decide what to buy and what not to buy. I am a Muslim living in Vietnam and I eat halal food while the majority eat even insects, dogs including their blood. Its a freedom of choice.

    laankikiya Monday, 06 January 2014 11:30 AM

Mr Bindu ,have you seen from your eyes that "halaal" not available in India? what a bullshit you are talking about? go to the market in India and look for "halaaL products mark, you will realize it.

Absolutely true. people who are burning with jealousy inwardly will get completely destroyed by the same jealousy.

I really dont understand why so much fuss? I have seen Muslim women wearing mini skirts and eating non halal food, also there re monks who womanize and eat beef and take liquor, take any religion there is some one does hanky panky and it is a shame to accuse the religion, take the good things from every religion and you become a winner.

Whole theme is a sham. No body can give certificate of goodness of material.

    lankakolla Tuesday, 07 January 2014 08:57 AM

majority of smugglers in SL are from your people, and talking about halal...

    Henchayyek Monday, 06 January 2014 12:01 PM

For those who are against Halaal, please note none of the companies are reacharging the Halaal cost to customers of it's product, as far as the fee is concerned it very minimal and has no significance in pricing a product or service. Hence, as customers no one gets affected, further it will allow everyone muslims as well as non muslims. One more thing, nowadays all the hotels around the Island focus on providing Halal food to tourists because the lavish spending tourists are coming from arab countries only, others westerniers are all stingy and coming with small budgets. So if Srilanka needs more income from toursim then let them have Halaal products or lose it. My dear Sinhalese don't be a trap to Bodu Bala Sena, maintain your peace with other religions. This country belongs to everyone, not for any single religion.

    AM Monday, 06 January 2014 12:02 PM

its a sham. No body can give a give the certificate

Are you and your ancestors originally from Sri Lanka? C'mon Shehan, what these people are trying to do is to help their people and us consume good quality food and items. Certain Racist groups have turned the good things into bad things for their advantage and popularity. Shame to call us Buddhists. Don't tell them to go b'cos they are one of the main income factor to the Govt. with their business taxes and not you.

Peace Lover Monday, 06 January 2014 12:14 PM

Oh God, Bindu, The Halaal Certificate was taken off sometime ago. You would have watched the news, I hope? After that the media asked the Chairman of Chamber of Commerce if the prices of goods will come down, the answer was NO, why b'cos the charges were so small that it cannot be costed. So, Who is earnig???? Please understand b4 you comment.

Main issue is not the Halal - They didn't like the "Arabic" Script says Halal. This shows that issue with the visual identity . Any one can understand why ?. As far as Sri Lankans are concern its a "symbol" to identify immediately from a product as some cannot read English. " Hala" Ehuna Gaman - Netta Ginigaththa Rilawa Wage Duwanawa - Hethuwa Danne Nethuwa.
