Former UNP Parliamentarians Association today unanimously passed a resolution calling the party to hold a secret ballot in a situation where a consensus can not be reached in electing a leader.
The association had also called for the granting of voting rights for the members of Provincial Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas in the event of such a secret poll.
Former UNP Parliamentarians Association President Mahendra Wijeratne told the media today that they had further suggested that the party leader Ranil Wickremasighe resign from the leadership in the event the party cannot come together to decide on the leadership.

Ranil being kicked out is the best thing that can happen to the country and opposition. MR & Company is sure to have sleepless nights.

UNPers should start a break-away group (similar to now defunct SLFP(M)) and make headway with village people as well as Colombo elite as true representatives of the entire country.

UNP is not a family property. Let a secret ballot decide who should lead it.
Miles Wednesday, 13 October 2010 07:50 PM
Dear Readers,
I would highly commend this proposal.
This is the most democratic reform. They all should vote for the UNP leadership election too. The former UNP parliamentarians (FUNPP) are democratic and they exercised their right to dissent with the voters’ decision and work in accordance with opposing ideals to meet the aspirations of government, which had a majority.
Pursuing lofty ideals, FUNPP even joined the government to ensure the public aspirations in the manifesto, in electing them to parliament are achieved. The UNPP lost elections due to bad the rotten party hierarchy an policy, even appointing them to stand election! We would have known the truth the “first past the post” system
Baba Boo Wednesday, 13 October 2010 07:03 PM
Just kick Ranil out of the party and that will solve most of the problems not only in the UNP but also the opposition. I am sure MR will not like this idea.
Hemals Wednesday, 13 October 2010 06:07 PM
ballot box will be changed secretly :)
