UNP MP Sajith Premadasa says that he will consider accepting any position within the UNP only if he is elected through an internal party election. Premadasa has also dismissed reports that he has been offered a deputy leader’s position by the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.

“I haven’t being offered the deputy leaders position of the party unlike the stories that are doing its rounds,” Premadasa said.

Premadasa added that he did not believe positions could be filled by selection and that it should only be filled by an internal election at the party convention. He said that only then will he consider taking a position within the party.

Ranil has to go - and that's it. Sajith has all credentials to be the UNP leader. Hope individuals like Ravi, Tissa and Kiriella will accept this.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 03:16 AM

Past is history and forget it now.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 03:31 AM

whats the purpose of talking about the past? for good or bad its gone. now it should be about the future.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 03:53 AM

Sajith Premadasa is right. ALL positions in the UNP should be by election. It is time - after so many defeats - that Ranil Wickremesinghe asked the party for a vote of confidence in his leadership. He should show some leadership qualities by initiating the move rather than being evicted, which the party should do, if he fails to do so.
In all other democratic parties in UK and Australia, the losing leader ALWAYS asks for a vote of confidence from his party. Is he a man or a mouse?

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 04:08 AM

Ranil must stay until UNP succumb fully.

    'Suba Anagathayak'

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 04:09 AM

The one and Only best UNP politician, There will be a huge impact in the poltical history when he becomes the Party leader.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 04:51 AM

Sajith. You are the one who can lead the party

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 04:56 AM

Elected or not, he must first start taking public positions on national issues. He has not done that. Sajith only talks in broad terms about development and Hambantota issues. I have never seen him taking a position on governance, constitution, 13th Amendment, 17th Amendment, electoral reform, human rights, ethnic issue, media, judiciary etc. He needs to grow up, politically speaking.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 05:28 AM

    Jay & Makalu,
100% agreed. I Have nothing against Sajith or his father. But as Jay suggests Sajith had to stay at least as the second in command for experience in matters pointed out by Jay. Futher it has to be remembered that the rightful decision by RW to stand by RP during the impeachment crisis and also his moral decision to stand out when Gamini wanted to contest the Presidential Elections. RW has a proven record of good economic management.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 05:33 AM

Thanks Jay...Finally an intelligent comment, I totally agree with you, he needs to mature politically before he accepts/assumes leadership, otherwise he will not only destroy himself but the party as well

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 02:05 AM

    Real gentleman...

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:12 AM

You will loose like the general did. Ranil will still be the leader of UNP.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:21 AM

If I remember right - Sajith said he would emulate his father's good qualities and not his weaknesses. Sajith has the right approach - he will never throw out Ranil - he is a gentleman - but he has a plan for 2017, and will work for it from now. He is the most suitable to succeed Ranil. Ranil is good for the city - Sajith is good for the grassroots. Ranil should not talk much on platforms now - he should leave it to Sajith & Dayasiri.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:22 AM

Sajith you are the most suitable person for UNP leadership

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:57 AM

Everybody wants Ranil to go. Different people have different agendas. Is Sajith capable of filling the vacuum created by Ranil if he leaves. I think it is time for all to get together and contribute your efforts to make UNP a credible opposition. Assistant or Deputy Leadership is good for Sajith, so that in time to come he could learn to be a proper leader. But again, when you are at the top................we know how all the presidents behaved.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 08:06 AM

Exactly Jay. Happy to see some logical people like you with a wise thinking above what is presented by media. Sajith's stand is very unclear. I've hardly seen him in political interviws even. The way he currently acts suits him to be the president of the Hambanthota provincial council .

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 09:25 AM

A true leader would never give up the game. Try your best Sajith. People are waiting for you. take the country to the glory by eliminating the poverty. Stop the thefts of the government properties by the politicians. YOU CAN........

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 10:00 AM

Sajith you are the only one capable of bringing back the past glory to this grand old party.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 10:21 AM

Why all blame Mr.Ranil Wickramasinha alone for the downfall of the UNP.There are many more to be blamed. Few to mention are Mr. Ravi K, Mr. Lakshman K, Mangala S and Dr.Jayalath J.The statements they made during the war period hurt the people very much.People were more sympathetic towards the army .UNP's failier to aknowledge that the war was winning was one reason for their failier.Changing the leader alone will not help .First make a programe to win the hearts of the people. It will take time but keep working hard.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 11:11 AM

Sajith must take the leadership of UNP.. He is the only one capable of making UNP victorious,, He can make it 2 next presidential votes in 2017..

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 04:10 PM

thats the way for a true leader..well done sajith...

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 01:35 PM

If his father had done this , Still UNP in power , Sajith do not forget that it is your father brought / selected Sothi Upali and Mora Sunil to UNP working comitee.

And selected DB Wijetunga while Lalith and Gamini were the most suitable .

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 01:45 PM

Leader in waiting. President in waiting. Hail the coming of democracy to the people, for the people. Srilanka will be back in the world map for the right reasons and god bless Srilanka. Many awaits your time for you will be greater than your predecessors.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 01:54 PM

    WELL SAID SAJITH.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 02:26 PM

Sajith's attitude for elections within the Party is the right approach to democraticize the UNP From the Leadership position onwards. Its hightime RW thinks positvely and act in a proactive manner.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 02:31 PM

If a person like Sajith is made party leader it is 100% sure that the party will break up to pieces. So, it has to be careful, not to touch the leader post while RW is alive. One day he will show the whole world that he is the only person who can make the country peaceful and economically developed.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 02:52 PM

IT IS A VERY GOOD TO LEARN AND FOLLOW THE RIGHT THINGS.IT IS TIME TO ELECT PARTY LEADERS BY PARTY ELECTIONS.THIS IS THE RIGHT TIME MR RANIL WIKRAMASINGHA TO INTRODUCE THE RULES FOR PARTY ELECTIONS WHICH MR SAJITH HAS PROPOSED RECENTLY.IT IS GOOD FOR THE PARTY AS WELL AS TO THE COUNTRY,OTHER MAJOR PARTIES ALSO WILL HAVE TO FOLLOW THE SAME THING SOONER OR LATER.
MR RANIL IS A FAR SIGHTED POLITICIAN WITH LOVE FOR PEACE AND PROSPERITY FOR THE COUNTRY.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 03:41 PM

Excellent stand from a man with a back bone. Ranil should not be allowed to hood wink the party with bogus reforms. Enough is Enough. Its time for a new leader for the UNP who will rebuild this once great party and that man is Sajith.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 04:00 PM

we are really want to see you as our future leader but meantime we dont want to keep away Mr.RW immidiatly so work out for right decision and make sure to come in right time also..

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 04:07 PM

That is the way it should be. If RW is a truely democratic, he must follow the fundamentals of democracy.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 01:05 PM

first of all, pls take leadership and evict Mr.Ranil

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 04:32 PM

Quite right! Bring democracy to the Party!

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 06:40 PM

A true leader finally emerges, from the embers and dark clouds. It's time for Ranil to bid farewell!

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 07:31 PM

An internal election proposal wil be fruitful ...

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 09:01 PM

A very far sighted and principled move on the part of Sajith, for which he ought to be commended. Holding internal elections to elect leaders will undoubtedly pave the way for the party to salvage itself from the current, deeply troubled, circumstances.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 09:49 PM

It's refreshing to see someone with his head screwed-on right. I sincerely hope that there are internal elections and that egos don't dominate. If these people truly care for the country, they will let the best leader emerge. It's blatantly obvious that the UNP needs both a change of face and a change of pace.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 10:40 PM

Du, so you could not find even a single fault of Sajith and had to depend on stories about the father in order to sling mud? Why not also come out with some stories of brothers and sisters of people presently in power?.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 11:00 PM

i WOULD LIKE TO ASK HIM HOW HE BECAME HAMBANTOTA DISTRICT LEADER. HE WAS NOT ELECTED BUT WAS SELECTED BY RW INSPITE OF HAVING MORE SENIOR LEADERS IN THE DISTRICT.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 12:42 AM

Its time Ranil stepped down and allowed new leadership to take the party forward. The UNP has been stagnant under the leadership of lack luster Ranil's leadership. Why is he still hanging on to the position? It's time for a change and reinvigorate the party. Otherwise, it would be the sad demise of the once powerful popular UNP for ever.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 01:33 AM

No need to repeat the mistakes done by the father. Sajith is correct.
