A tense situation prevailed in Kattankudy this morning.Villagers in the Nawalkuda area in Kattankudy protested against the police. The protest turned violent with villagers resorting to burning tyres in protest of a "mystery man" the police had taken into custody.

The villagers had apprehended a man trying to abuse a woman and the Police had intervened and arrested him. A section of the villagers had demanded the police to show the face of the man, due to the belief that the police had set the man free upon arrest. The police had declined this request which resulted in the protest.

The OIC of the Kattankudy Police had told protestors that the person taken into custody had been produced before the Batticaloa acting magistrate and was remanded until August 23. (M.Sukri, K.S. Vathanakumar, Jifran)

The myth of the grease man has spread to more places than the UK riots. At least NO ONE points the blame directly at the violence being government inspired in the UK but all are pointing the finger at the Government in SL.

So please take responsibility and explain to the public what all this is about, and explain how the Government expects to stop it. It is tragic that in free Sri Lanka it is the Government that is the cause of all the violence and use the Police as scapegoats by fooling the people

while Sri Lanka is facing war crimes accussations, this incident is going to affect sri lanka negatively.

If responsible authority fail to take action every citizen will become police for self defense.

I dont think its a good idea, they might give VIP protection and save them from the people.

    Dee Sunday, 14 August 2011 01:56 AM

Cant wait to beat the guts out of one of these grese fellows. As for police they are good for signalling go when the green light comes and say stop when a red light comes. cant blame them because they are just doing a job .

Surprise, surprise: All over the country people have no confidence in the police and want to do some lynchings of their own. Its a classic symptom of the breakdown of Civil Society, with more to come. Who brought the police to this sorry state?

    Increase the price of Grease!

By British standards the behavior of our people are exemplary. They burnt only tyres, whereas Brits looted, smashed up, and torched public and private property.

Government has nothing to do with 'creation' It is all work of the God and the devil Satan. Who created the Greese yakkas ? God or the Devil ? Why are they covered in grease ?

    Hasan Saturday, 13 August 2011 11:29 AM

There were few incidents where Grees Yakas were wandering. But now it seems people have exaggerated it and they are unnecessarily beating innocent civilians thinking that they are Grees Yakas.
Meanwhile opportunistic thieves are taking advantage on this situation. So people got to figure out who's actually Gress Yaka and Who's Innocent Civilian.
Police should act independently without any political pressure and solve this issue for public. There's no need for Army commanders, this is not a war, Don't try to militarize these issues.

It is better to provoke self defence rule in times of this type of special crisis! No friendly neighbourhoods, it seems! Hostility every where, xenophobic! It won't help for ethnic reconciliation!

    Kadira Saturday, 13 August 2011 06:12 AM

Well is this in the UK. No this can not be in Sri Lanka.

Calistus Jayatilleke Saturday, 13 August 2011 09:15 AM

Obviously, these "Grease Yakkas" are a creation of the government itself to terrorise the innocent villagers using Army and Police. The Police are in the know about it, and that is why when "arrested" culprits are given a salute and allowed to go scot free. There could be something more sinister behind this whole exercise.

    Fair N Square Saturday, 13 August 2011 09:08 AM

it isnt ONE, the IGP said they arrested 47 culprits... form vigilante committees and apprehend the devils n be done with em so we save tax rupees....

    Fair N Square Saturday, 13 August 2011 09:06 AM

Why carch and hand over to police. They are murderers pure n simple... break their bones extract all information and leave for the dead AND THEN CALL POLICE FROM A BOOTH... there seems to be a hidden agenda on the GREASE man... scenario...

    Don Saturday, 13 August 2011 08:48 AM

They wan't a reason to extend the emergency.

    I Hussein Saturday, 13 August 2011 08:29 AM

This can be a conspiracy of the certain govt elements with a racial party to invoke people and make a racial violence to divert attention from some facts.

    niyaz Saturday, 13 August 2011 07:43 AM

This is getting a bit too suspicious. How come one "grease devil" is creating so much havoc. Is there anything more sinister happening than just a grease devil.....or is it a red herring?

    musthafa Saturday, 13 August 2011 07:04 AM

    Hello Kadira,
please try to know the real situation- Many sitaution- Erakkamam, eravur, sammmanthurai, potuvil and kattankudy- all places these grease men were cught by public and handed over to police- but no any action by police - they were released by the police also in Erakkamam - police constable saluted to the grease devil- so what is going on in the country? any politicians talk about it? or all media closed the mouth? this more worse than LTTE terrorism- LTTE never done such things- all these happaning soon after removal of all weapons from those areas. This is well planned by some group under the goverment

Imran Hussein Saturday, 13 August 2011 06:47 AM

Catch these ugly guys and call the STF not the police.

    Haffie Saturday, 13 August 2011 06:43 AM

It seems there is something fishy about all these "Grease Man" episodes, which is taking place all over the island. Undoubtedly, there is an organized body behind all these. The Government should pay serious and immediate attention to this before worse things happen.

    musthafa Saturday, 13 August 2011 06:40 AM

MR. KADIRA- YOU WHY PEOPLE AGAINST POLICE??? PEOPLE CAUGHT THE GREASE MAN AND HANDOVER TO POLICE IN ERAVUR, SAMMANTHURAI, AKKARAIPATTU AND KATHANKUDY- POLICE JUST TOOK THOSE FELLOW AND CHASE THE PEOPLE OUT OF THE STATION- ALSO IN ERAKKAMAM WHEN PEOPLE CAUGHT ONE GREASE MAN AND HANDED OVER TO POLICE - ONE POLICE FELLOW SALUTE TO THE GREASE DEVIL - ALSO AMPARAI GA ALSO INVLOVE IN THE TENSE SITUTAION - SO WHAT IS GOING ON HERE- THIS SITIUATION HAPPANING SOON AFTER THEY WITHDREW ALL LEGAL AND ILEGAL WEAPONS FROM THE SO CALLED AREAS
