Probes into deaths of livestock in four districts

Over 200 deaths of cattle and buffaloes have been reported during the last five months in four districts including Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa and Ratnapura, the Department of Animal Product and Health (DAPH) said today.

The Department of Animal Product and Health Director S. A. Sivasothy said the deaths of cattle and buffaloes were natural but the Department had already launched investigations into the deaths.

The investigations carried out by the Livestock Department, had revealed four reasons which caused the considerable number of deaths and they were foot-and-mouth disease, weakness problems, Pneumonia and bacteria named Pasteurella Multocida.

“We have taken preventive measures for the diseases and provided anti-bacteria for the Pasteurella Multocida. We don’t see these deaths unusual, because among 30,000 cattle and buffaloes, 200 deaths were normal. There were various reasons for the deaths,” Mr. Sivasothy said.

He also asked farmers to report if cattle and buffaloes owned by them suffer with a disease or died so that preventive measures taken to protect the animals’ lives.

He also said the drought condition and flooding that took place at the four districts could also cause the deaths of the cattle and buffaloes. (Piyumi Fonseka)
