Prison guards and several other prison officials attached to the Welikada prison have refrained from work and launched a trade union action from this morning.

Prisons officials said the trade union action was launched due to several issues they are facing including alleged arbitrary transfers and special privileges given to officials of the intelligence and security units of the prison.

They said transporting inmates to courts in several areas were delayed due to the trade action. Several Prison Sergeants, Vocational instructors, Drivers and Store Keepers including women officers engaged in the trade union action.(DS)
