CEB said it will continue the day-time power cuts until Wednesday and meanwhile decide on whether or not to extend the power cut period further.
It said power cuts would not be imposed after 6 pm because the CEB did not wish to burden the students studying for their GCE A/L exams.

The CEB said the Norochcholai Power Plant was still not operational and that it would take two more weeks for the repair work to be completed and added that it had expressed its grave concern to the Chinese supplier regarding the regular breakdowns.

Meanwhile CEB workers are continuing their strike action and they say they will do so till their demands are met.

The CEB said about 5,000 temporary workers would be recruited to attend to the work earlier done by the strikers. (Sandun A. Jayasekara & Nishan Casseem)

As long as engineers are at work without striking there won't be any power failures from established hydro and gas units. The strike is lead by JVPers while their minor staff getting salaries close to government doctors. I am happy to see government uses all means of breaking this strike.

Aparna Thenuwara Monday, 13 August 2012 02:27 PM

Why the Power cut only because of brkedown Norochcholai Power Plant, all these years we getting power from Hydro power. As per Minister Power supply in Sri Lanka supplied 85% from Deisel. What about Hydro plants. Eg: Lakshpana,Victoria all these power not supply to National Power Grid Network.

Its the Chinese themselves who said "good things no cheap and cheap things no good". So, what more proof is needed to say that we have all become "Konday Bandapu Cheennus"

    farieze Monday, 13 August 2012 12:05 PM

dear minister, please request for cost cut of all food items as well. then no problem of power cut.

The matter is'nt linked to the strike actions or the general inefficiencies. The Hydro gen is reaching zero. It seems that everyone wanted the CEB to burn more and more fuel. Today you can enjoy, but tomorrow we all have to pay.

    Daya Monday, 13 August 2012 09:05 AM

Dont ask the public to manage the inefficiencies within the org. With the cencus they should have a plan year-on-year growth of population to meet the increase energy demand and on unfavourable weather conditions.

" Power cut won't be imposed after 6 pm" is not for the benefits of the public but because of SLPL. What a farce CECB

    Abilashan Monday, 13 August 2012 08:04 AM

Sri Lanka is just a piece of a country unlike others, i really have no idea why this country has to face this sorts of problems....

Norochcholai Power Plant - Made in China - Always breakdown like rest of the goods

    parak Monday, 13 August 2012 07:40 AM

Why we can't cut our electricity consumption by 50% (domestic) and allow the industries to run smoothly, while reducing the burden on CEB. Are we waiting for the government to impose more control measures ?

bonnie mallie Monday, 13 August 2012 07:44 AM

Time for professionals - Doctors, Lawayers, Accountants, Engineers to take over ruling this country - at least they will have common sense and won't be just talking big !! DO NOT VOTE FOR ANYONE WHO DOES NOT HAVE A PROPER PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION !

    banda Monday, 13 August 2012 07:11 AM

It looks like that without these strikers, CEB can function

    Farzan - Kalutara Monday, 13 August 2012 07:10 AM

If there is no power cut on EID DAY, it would be more appropriate since it is a festival which is celebrated after one month long fasting.

Just Another Citizen Monday, 13 August 2012 07:07 AM

Goods made in China don't carry warranty?

    Munshif Monday, 13 August 2012 06:57 AM

Looks like the CEB is playing a drama here! This is to hide the fact is our country is facing a power crisis!
