Consumers could pay their utility bills to the postman when he comes to deliver your mail from September 1, Postmaster General D.L.P. Rohana Abeyaratne said.

“Cabinet approval has been granted to increase the amount of money a postman could hold during his hours of duty to Rs.20,000,” he said and added that this would authorise postmen to accept cash for payments of utility bills such as electricity and telephone and insurance.”

Mr. Abeyaratne said the Postal Department was discussing with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board with regard to the payment of water bills.

He said a temporary bill would be issued by the postman when carrying out the transaction. Sri Lanka has about 8,000 working as postmen.

“The pilot project was carried out in the Uva Province and within three months the department had earned a profit of Rs.1.1million,” Mr. Abeyratne said.

He said with the new system functioning smoothly, the Postal Department hoped to expand it to other.

“All postal department employees will be paid an incentive bonus depending on the profit,” Mr. Abeyratne said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

Postman receives collector's fee from other state department (water, electricity) so how can this be called a profit? It is tax money moved from one state department to the other.

    Mr. Postmaster General.

Well its good that you are trying to help the people, but is this going to work out, one thing we are encouraging trouble, specially when handling money, its better to have mobile services with responsible persons going around to do this job, its a better way for security reasons, and charge a small levy to the public.

    mail_guy Wednesday, 13 August 2014 08:39 AM

Insted of a bicycle they need to be driven a BMW.

Sonali De Silva Wednesday, 13 August 2014 08:36 AM

Are they going to provide them with arms too in case they are waylaid? I hope the postman won't be a victim of robbers because 20,000 is a lot of money to be handled by a man on a bicycle specially when everyone knows he is having cash on him. Colombo is not the same as Uva.

Good move as postmen don't have much work nowadays. But make sure their security as well as security of civilian's money. Also update the system asap, otherwise there'll be a huge balance payable mentioned in bills.

    Empulze Wednesday, 13 August 2014 01:58 PM

The security of these official will have to be guaranteed by the said official.Good move. Why cant they use the same postmen to issue meter readings on water and Electricity. via DM Android App
