The Sri Lankan Embassy in Paris, France will oppose the erection of a statue of former political wing leader of the LTTE, S. P. Thamilchelvan in France, the External Affairs Ministry said today.

External Affairs Ministry Director General of Public Communication and Spokesperson Bandula Jayasekara told the Daily Mirror that the Lankan embassy would write to those concerned including the Mayor of La Courneuve, the French town in the northeastern suburbs of Paris where the statue is being erected.

La Courneuve, reportedly home to a large Tamil population, has already laid down the foundation for the statue which is being erected in light of the third death anniversary of Thamilchelvan.

It is reported that Sri Lankans in Germany and France have already written objecting to the erection of a statue of a member of a terrorist organization, to the Mayor of La Courneuve as well as French President Nicole Sarkozy. Thamilchelvan was killed in November, 2007 in Kilinochchi. (DS)

good one !! I dont mind having a one here in SL also !

    faqi Monday, 01 November 2010 03:58 AM

Why are people here commenting on something not yet done, also why are we insulting France and the French people?. If its being erected on private property in a free country with the approval of the local government there is nothing one could do. But if its being erected on public property, then people have a right to object. Also without going crazy and writing nonsense, a concerted effort should be made to inform the French Government and the French citizens, who really Thamilchelvam was; that he was a common terrorist belonging to one of the worlds worst terror groups and that he had innocent blood on his hands of both Tamil & Sinhala citizens of Sri Lanka, further that we all vehemently object to any form of representation of this terrorist being erected on the soil of the Republic of France ,

    tamilian Monday, 01 November 2010 05:09 AM

Then shut up and watch the statue being erected

    lankaputha Monday, 01 November 2010 03:48 AM

    raj Monday, 01 November 2010 03:24 AM

Can a statu be dangerous to Sri Lanka's security? It is the government of Sri Lanka who engaged negotiation with Tamilselvam.

    modawansa Monday, 01 November 2010 06:25 AM

This should be done on a step by step basis. Please be patient and support the process.

chris abey Monday, 01 November 2010 07:00 AM

Why dont we errect a statue of Karuna and KP and place flowers at their feet daily.?Whats the difference Tamil Chelvam ,Karuna or KP?

    Kamiss Monday, 01 November 2010 06:53 AM

The diaspora may be able to give an entirely wrong picture, but the fact remains Tamilselvam was part of the LTTE which has committed numerous atrocities against innocent civilians of all races. We hope France will take the correct decision.

    CW Monday, 01 November 2010 06:32 AM

Faqi ,try to build Osama Bin Laden's statue in your front yard. You will the reaction of so called super powers.

monarawila nilame Monday, 01 November 2010 06:30 AM

Tamil people should have their rights to erect a statue or what ever they want, as long as they do it in another country not in Sri Lanka. King Dutu Gemunu (not the present one) erected a chaithya and named it " Elara Maha Seya " after defeating him. Elara is a King and Thamil Chelvam is a murderer and a ruthless terrorist. Please keep that in mind and make sure, not carry even a photo of any LTTE terrorist within Sri Lankan soil.

    modawansa Monday, 01 November 2010 06:28 AM

Next will be a statue for SF in Welikada.

    modawansa Monday, 01 November 2010 06:26 AM

Did anyone ask you whether you mind it or not?

Calistus Jayatilleke Monday, 01 November 2010 03:23 AM

All this talk of crushing terrorism in the European capitals is bunkum since terrorism is interpreted as liberation when it comes to poor countries and real terrorism is only when their own countries are threatened.

knight rider Monday, 01 November 2010 06:24 AM

At least people will have something to spit on...

    modawansa Monday, 01 November 2010 06:23 AM
