Opposition CMC members will turn red: Muzammil

The Mayor of Colombo A. J. M. Muzammil yesterday said the opposition members of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) would turn red when they read his action plan for the year 2012 as they prevented him from presenting it by obtaining an enjoining order from courts to prevent him from convening a special council meeting.

Mr. Muzammil who went public with his action plan said it was his right to make a statement as the Mayor as per the Municipal Ordinance and that the opposition members prevented him from making a statement for no valid reason.

He also explained that losing the majority of the Finance Committee is not a matter of great concern as all development projects are only to be discussed in that committee. Mr. Muzammil explained that approval of the Finance Committee is not needed to implement any project as per the Municipal Ordinance.

Mr. Muzammil who outlined his action plan said the Municipal Service Board comprising both CMC officials and city dwellers would be set up in the future with an objective of involving the people in administration of the council. He said a website will be launched shortly to ensure the people’s right for information. All information on every matter including details on tenders would be published in this site, he assured.

He said the CMC would cooperate with the central government in some matters including the beautifying of the city.

Meanwhile Spokesman for opposition members of CMC Riza Zarook said they decided to obtain an enjoining order as they were suspicious of the Mayor. He also said the Mayor cannot convene a council meeting just to make a statement though he has the power to do so according to the Municipal Ordinance.

In another development, Democratic Peoples Front Member of the CMC, Kuganthan said they will back the UNP at the Municipal council continuously. He said it is sad to see the rest of the opposition trying to sabotage the administration of the council.

Mr. Kuganthan said this action would be a violation of people’s rights as they would not be able to obtain a good service from the council in a crisis situation. (Yohan Perera)
