A Nigerian was remanded today after he was suspected to have run a financial scam conducted via email, the Police said.

The Nigerian, residing in Sri Lanka, was alleged to have duped locals by sending them emails to the effect that they have won a prize from the United Nations. Thereafter they were told to deposit a fee in a local account to clear their winnings from customs.

The Police said that they had received many complaints of a scam of this nature being committed using Short Message Services (SMS) and e-mails.
