Sri Lankan High Commissioner in London, Dr Chris Nonis said that his resignation letter was accepted by the External Affairs Ministry yesterday (03).
He said that he was unlawfully assaulted by the Monitoring MP for the Ministry of External Affairs, in New York on September 24 and on the same day he met President Mahinda Rajapaksa and discussed the matter. He also said that he submitted his resignation letter on the same day and returned to London that evening.
“My resignation was accepted by the External Affairs Ministry yesterday (03),” Dr. Nonis today said.
In his resignation letter he stated that “…my unswerving loyalty to his Excellency the President and his family will always remain. I feel I have performed to the best of my ability and I am pleased that I had the opportunity to serve the country and the people of Sri Lanka.”
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday ordered investigations into the alleged assault on Dr. Chris Nonis and also External Affairs Ministry Secretary Kshenuka Senawiratne’s complaint against Dr. Nonis, the Government Information Department said yesterday.
Reports said MP Sajin Vaas Gunawardane allegedly assaulted Dr. Nonis at the New York residence of Dilan Ariyawansa, who is a director of SriLankan Airlines.
It is also learnt that until the President’s directive came, the External Affairs Ministry had not initiated any inquiry into the incident.
