The Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) said that they will be staging protests in front of all the universities countrywide on October 19, 20 and 21 in objection to the arrest of the 21 students at the Higher Education ministry last Thursday.

The students were arrested during a clash between the Police and the IUSF who had forcibly entered the Higher Education ministry premises in Town Hall after breaking its gates. Some 20 persons, including 12 policemen and eight students, were hospitalized following the clash. (Daily Mirror online)

Today I am really Proud to not to be university student. Because I don't want to calibaret me as sucha idoits who act foolish behaviour while studying. they are donkeys not students, don't

    M.Thenuwara Saturday, 16 October 2010 10:40 AM

It is better to privatized all the universities. Free education is enough now. Even it is better to do the same for the schools

    JayDee Saturday, 16 October 2010 10:41 AM

Closing down all universities is not an option. What will happen to the future of professional education of the country then? However such nonsense should not be tolerated. It is a minority that is creating all this trouble. They should be identified and suspended and should never be given a second chance. There isn't that much of trouble at the Moratuwa uni since strict disciplinary action is taken most of the time. Standard of O/L and A/L exams should be improved. Number of intakes for the degrees with less job market should be decreased (eg: Arts degree, Ayurrveda etc.). Sinhala medium degrees should be discontinued. Such action will help reduce all these riots, pickets, etc.

Nobody understand the simptom of the case. If you make JVP happy, every problem would be solved. Everything under the struggles of univ. students are manipulated by JVP.

    Manchanayake Saturday, 16 October 2010 11:13 AM

Most of the comments are from those who haven't visited university even for shelter from rain. You people do not understand the government's attempt to privatize education. They struggle to protect education system for future.

    Vijitha Saturday, 16 October 2010 11:17 AM

Anushka, Did you see them damaged public property? Government and mainly their left hand police make false allegations against those who criticize government's unfair action. SF also victim of such act.

    NT Saturday, 16 October 2010 11:23 AM

    Nala Saturday, 16 October 2010 03:57 PM

    pissupusa Saturday, 16 October 2010 04:27 PM

    dsr-neckar Saturday, 16 October 2010 04:56 PM

Those who boycott lectures and seminars MUST pay tuition fees. Free education MUST be provided only those who really want to study. All HOOLIGANS should be sent to Angoda.

    dsr-neckar Saturday, 16 October 2010 05:01 PM

You are correct. If students want to study, they should work and pay. Then they will know value of the money that they are wasting every day.

    dsr-neckar Saturday, 16 October 2010 05:04 PM

This guy need to be sent to Angoda and clean his brain very soon. Otherwise, he will destroy some more inocent student

    lakshitha Saturday, 16 October 2010 05:26 PM

It's so pathetic to see that Sri Lankans are not recognizing the value of free education!!!!

    MaPer Monday, 18 October 2010 03:38 AM

As JayDee says - closing universities is not the option. What about the students who genuinely want to study. These violent students also intimidate the peaceful students who are keen on graduating as fast as possible. These violent and every-protesting students should be identified, and suspended and an inquiry held, and if guilty, should be banned from further education. After all, education is free and they have no right to protest. It is the grassroots students who come from poor families who are indulging in the acts of violence - the majority Sinhala Baudha, gamey kollas and kellas! This is why the elitist students now opt not to enter unis and either find employment after ALs.

mat mathwew Saturday, 16 October 2010 06:37 PM

students in uk ,usa, japan , china and lots of other countries finish uni. before they become 25yrs. please we dont want to see you fighting , finish your studie please.. please..

    Here is the proof!

    Lionel Sunday, 17 October 2010 01:57 PM

Mr, S.B.Only you can tackle this bloody foolish thing .Go ahead we will support you at any time.Lionel

    Ravana Monday, 18 October 2010 10:02 AM

What's the problem we hire most CEO's from abroad (India) anyway !

    Ravana Monday, 18 October 2010 10:04 AM

    hp Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:08 AM

better to colse down all universities

    Anushka Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:12 AM

They break into the ministry, damage public property and still insist that they are the 'victims'. These so called representatives are a hindrance and a disgrace to the actual university students who are there to study.

    MagodisThuma Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:25 AM

They do everything... except studying !.

Dingiri Banda Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:26 AM

HAVE YOU HEARD OF ANY OTHER COUNTRY WHERE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS FIGHT LIKE THIS ALL THROUGH THE YEAR, IRRESPECTIVE OF THEIR GRIEVANCES? SRI LANKAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ARE AN UNFORTUNATE LOT WHO SPEND A GREAT DEAL OF THEIR PRECIOUS TIME IN PROTESTS AND FIGHTING, AND NOT STUDYING; NO WONDER MOST OF OUR GRADUATES ARE VERY POOR IN COMMUNICATION WHICH MAKES THEM LESS EMPLOYABLE. WHILE OTHER ASIAN COUNTRIES ARE SURGING AHEAD IN ALL SCALES, WE ARE SLIDING DOWNHILL. MY COUNTRY, I WEEP FOR THEE!

    Mohana Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:26 AM

Really- The Govt. should take very strong disciplinary action against these student "hooligans" and expell them from the universities. these hooligans are depriving the chance for thousands of genuine students who are eligible to enter universities.

saibu nanna Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:32 AM

    Rawdies......of our nation

Nalaka Weerakody Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:41 AM

if late president H.E, Premadasa is here now he will teach all these students a nice lesson....

    Yas Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:42 AM

Does not realise them a value of free education.

    happz Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:43 AM

one protest for 3 students = 21 arrested + 3 already in jail
    3 protests for 21 students = ----------- lol

    Don Sunday, 17 October 2010 06:14 AM

The JVP THUGS must me ousted from universities so that the ordinery students who want to really study can complete their academic studies.

Bird Eye Wednesday, 20 October 2010 07:39 AM

It’s time to stop wasting our money on these universities, let’s build some private universities. Divert the funds for scholarships for poor children who are talented.

    Musthafa Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:48 AM

This is the result of free education , treat them like Indian-let them pay for education then they will know.

    sw Sunday, 17 October 2010 06:31 AM

All this fuss and remanding is because the students hooted at SB, when you look at SB's record of past actions and statements he fully deserves more than one hooting.

jagath wettasinghe Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:48 AM

these rude students behaviour should be demolished

    Anura Sunday, 17 October 2010 06:36 AM

    LS Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:49 AM

    Sanje Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:50 AM

    Hamzie-Doha Saturday, 16 October 2010 09:54 AM

And also change the name from (IUSF) to (IUS - Inter Uni Student). Anything ending with SF isn't a good ormen nowadays. :D

    kel Saturday, 16 October 2010 10:25 AM
