Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariwasasm today said a circular will be issued within the next few days that would call-off the controversial leadership training programs that were held for Principals in military camps.

“We are presently in the process of preparing the circular and in order for the program to be cancelled it has to be authorized by the President. We will be carrying out the necessary processes within the next few weeks,” he added.

Principals were given leadership training in military camps under the previous government where following the two-week program, they were awarded military titles. Over 4000 Principals received military titles through this program and it came under heavy criticism by education sector professionals who pointed out it results in a heavy militarization of the education sector. A principal also died while partaking in a training program in 2013. (Lakna Paranamanna )

So, no more ridiculous shows by "Colonel" Principals. Curtains down for another one of those crazy ideas of the Rajapakse Brothers Company.

If it was done without the consent of the Principals, it was very wrong. Further what can you achieve in two weeks period. Wastage of time and money.

Military training in two weeks time amounts to a punishment than a training?

Srian Obeyesekere Monday, 26 January 2015 09:59 AM

One principal died also as a result. Military training my Foot.

    Jackal Saturday, 24 January 2015 08:30 PM

Actually people older than 80 need military training to fend off attackers. Rajapaksas should have rounded up all the 80 year olds and given them 2 months rigorous military training. lol.

Simple mind Saturday, 24 January 2015 08:57 PM

@Baas there are plenty of countries who have developed without giving military training to all its citizens. More than military training what Sri Lankans should be taught is ethics, honesty, compassion unless they wanna be a baas

Leadership is training is good for all the citizens. We need to have a proper plan to implement. School principals had their leadership training by experience. First , we should start providing leadership training to our politicians.

Leadership is training is vital but military training is not the way to go about it. Leadership development has to happen in a very methodical way. hope it will take place in a more effective setting via DM Android App

    das Monday, 26 January 2015 01:16 PM
