In a continuing spree of violence unleashed by bouncers at reputed nightclubs in Colombo, a 21-year-old youth who was severely assaulted early on Saturday by the bouncers of Kama Colombo - Galle Face, Colombo 2, is currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo.

Kama’s response
When the Daily Mirror contacted Kama Colombo on a number that was provided on its website, a person identifying himself as the public relations manager, refused to provide any information regarding the incident.

“Why are you….. ing trying to fix me in this, I’m the public relations manager and I don’t know about this. All I know is that the bouncers were not involved.  You can talk to my boss,” he said.

When the Daily Mirror asked for a contact number of his ‘boss’ the hostile public relations manager refused to provide it.

“I can’t give it to you, why should I?” he asked.
The Kollupitiya Police said a businessman and a bouncer identified by the victim and eye witnesses, had fled their residences and were still at large.

“A businessman and another person are suspected to have been involved in the incident. Both of them are still at large and we are investigating to apprehend them immediately” police said.

The club’s bouncers who acted as private security personnel had allegedly taken the law into their hands and mercilessly beaten the young student, forcing him down a flight of stairs, according to eyewitnesses.

The student had pleaded with the manager who was standing outside the club to stop the assault.

According to eyewitnesses the manager had then taken the boy to the car park at the rear of the club and directed the bouncers to continue with the assault.

It was also revealed that Kama Colombo, allegedly managed by a nephew of a top business magnate formerly involved in the Casino and Nightclub trade, did not possess a valid liquor license.

“They have closed down the club, and they did not possess a valid liquor license. These aspects will be looked into,” The Police said.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror Police spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardana said bouncers of a night club or any other private security officer could not assault any individual.

“No one can take the law into their hands and no one could assault any individual unless it is within the parameters of self defence,” he said.

Earlier there were several reports of violence unleashed by bouncers of clubs with no action being taken against them due to the clubs being owned by influential businessmen, and companies employing bouncers also having equal clout.

Just because you go to a club doesn't make you WHO you are. there are a million religious people in this country doing the worst things...and let's not talk about our so called honourable politicians and those in the public sector!

lol. just cos u go and dance do some music? Not a big deal at all. evolve with the times and tolerate those who enjoy clean fun.

The problem here is thuggery not about judging people who go to clubs!!

    Dinesh W Monday, 08 July 2013 08:27 AM

I've been to Kama a few times and from what I've seen the staff including security are usually good nurtured. This is just, as mentioned an 'allegation' so I don't see why everyone has jumped the gun and blamed the club security.

    Hemantha Monday, 08 July 2013 08:25 AM

See see, these are the miracles. Night clubs oh yeah. That's what we need the most!!

    Romesh Monday, 08 July 2013 08:18 AM

I was there that night , all I saw was 2 groups fighting on the road didn't see any bouncers or staff from Kama

    KD Monday, 08 July 2013 08:19 AM

Need a slight correction to that statement.
Majority of news reported by DM are crime related or represents some form of negativity.
Of course, this comment won't get published as it does not align with editors' mindset.

    Oshanda Monday, 08 July 2013 08:19 AM

You think educated will come to work as boncers....lol

    Oshanda Monday, 08 July 2013 08:18 AM

Story is incomplete , why was this kid attacked, did he abused a girl inside, stire a fright, whats the reason for attack.

    prag Monday, 08 July 2013 07:48 AM

What this student doing in night club??? Parents to Note.

    Johnny Monday, 08 July 2013 07:45 AM

Usually bouncers are big built musseld men with no brains wot so ever, so who ever manage these uneducated fools should take the full responsibility. And I've been to kama few times, and trust me you get to see lot of young girls whom i believe under 18, and the general attitude of the club staff is not at all friendly and its very hostile, this is not the 1st time this club has been reported to have clashes. So better cancel the club license and give it to someone whose capable of running a proper night club with good ethics and be strict on under age girls/boys entering the club.

    OMG Monday, 08 July 2013 07:42 AM

Sign of things to come with more casinos and the evil that comes along with it.

Why are the callers of Dharma Rajya silent?

    Amila.G Monday, 08 July 2013 08:30 AM

Thuggery has come to stay in this Country, You watch tele dramas same is shown in different ways day in day out.. That is the reason why given a chance , people get out of this Country. Not they hate Sri Lanka, Because they want to live in peace .

wonder of asia ha hahee,,,,these thugs should be severely dealt with,,,

    OMG Monday, 08 July 2013 07:13 AM

I hope this will deter youth from patronizing night clubs.

manuwel giyar Monday, 08 July 2013 07:05 AM

unfortunately, some people think that going night clubbing will put them in the same league as social elites. They will go back even if they lose a few teeth or many pints of blood. We cannot dictate socially "classy" behavior to others, but many people are sadly conditioned to think doing certain things (no matter how stupid they may be) will make them look "posh". Remember last valentines day, a poor youth wearing rubber slippers was knifed to death outside a club?

Suq Madique Monday, 08 July 2013 07:05 AM

Amazing Sri Lanka......can't even go out for an evening of fun without being pulverized by thugs and goons. Anarchy has become the order of the day

    Ariya Monday, 08 July 2013 07:04 AM

The word 'Kama' is more linked with 'sex', in my thinking. Consider such related words as 'kamaya', 'kamukaya', 'kamaturaya'. etc, in Sinhala usage.

    AL-AMBRILLA Monday, 08 July 2013 06:59 AM

Time to rake care of the owners and their loyal staff, legally or otherwise... Whatever comes first...

Come on BBS! Where are you? Sleeping? You are also part of unofficial Police force!

    Lokka Monday, 08 July 2013 06:23 AM

First ask the owners of the clubs to learn how to run a club. Uneducated idiots should not be allowed to be employed there. You gotta to have a very high level of decipline, if you possess some kinda weapon or any security devices/services..

    Patta Monday, 08 July 2013 09:47 AM

Send him a get well card then

    mike Monday, 08 July 2013 09:02 AM

pls spread the word around about this club so that expats /overseas visitors all avoid them. put them out of biz is the best reply

    PRASANNAJIT Monday, 08 July 2013 08:45 AM

In the first place whoever goes to these night clubs should expect these scenarios as it is a way of life for those who patronise night clubs and casinos. More to expect with big Casinos and night clubs coming in.

    Arjuna Monday, 08 July 2013 08:43 AM

I don't think shutting down a place is the answer for this. Happens everywhere else in the world , need to find ways to deal with these kinda matters and to find away to reduce incidents like this, this is not the first time and it will not be the last .

    lyza Monday, 08 July 2013 08:40 AM

That's hilarious. I have a feeling that's why YOU go to clubs. So I want to have a drink (or few) with my friends and I want music and an atmosphere. Where should I go ? Elders home ? Church Gathering ?

    lyza Monday, 08 July 2013 08:35 AM

He is an adult. Undergraduates make up for the highest proportion of patrons for most bars and clubs. Anywhere! What did you imagine an inside of a club looked like ? Did you think it was full of aged pensioners

    Mama Monday, 08 July 2013 08:33 AM

"YOU are NOT an officer in Uniform representing the government, HENCE u don't have a right to assault.". So what you are implying is, if you represent the government then you have the RIGHT to Assault! That is an unfair statement!!

    sami Monday, 08 July 2013 08:34 AM

where is BBS ? why cant they stop night clubs ?? isnt that against bhudism too.

    Milroy Sunday, 07 July 2013 11:55 PM

when you put your life in things of the world and choose this type of life style this the end result of this wickedness has taken over the world and love for another has becoming less.

    Duminda N Jayatileke Monday, 08 July 2013 02:38 AM

Why would you need night clubs in a poor country like SL when more then 80% of the population is living under the poverty line.

    M.A..NAZIM Monday, 08 July 2013 02:34 AM

IT IS SAD NOTE HOWEVER THE GOVT AND POLICE DEPT WHOM ARE THE SOLE CUSTODIAN OF THE LAW NOT JUSTIFIABLY IMPLEMENTING THE LAW SO WHAT CAN BE EXPECT FROM THE MASSES. THIS WILL PAVE THE WAY FOR A BAD SIGN TO THE COUNTRY IF IT CONTINUES

    Iver Monday, 08 July 2013 02:30 AM

When it comes to night clubs, the names itself carries full of swing of these kind of incidents .. However the traditional law enforcements are not strong enough to answer or counter attack for these kind of incidents.... For youths , it is better for themselves to avoid these kind places and concentrate of their direction into more productive way !! The blend of Girls and liquor would always bring more harm than peace of mind in life ... So please separate them when when anyone would expect to involve in both agonizing products in the night club society !!

    Dev Monday, 08 July 2013 02:19 AM

    Oh no wonder kama !!
Hey people as a night life person let me tell you one thing Kama was having a good reputation but the hidden secret is that they think that money is everything - under 18 is not allowed but when it comes to influences there is alot to tell.. i see alot of young girls & guys ! well GIRLS WALK IN FREE NO MATTER THEY ARE 14 or etc. this is illegal as per the law the bouncers are not allowed to do this criminal assassination!! I dont agree

    Fair N Square Monday, 08 July 2013 01:37 AM

interesting PRIVATE relations officer... who wags his tail like a faithful dog.... People who work as bouncers MOST times don't work with ethics and think they are above the law.... HELLO wake up... YOU are NOT an officer in Uniform representing the government, HENCE u don't have a right to assault. within or even outside the premises... bring these culprits to book.. lock em up so that this will be a deterrent to OTHER would be offenders.....

In sri lanka the police too assault, torture citizens and beat them to death when arrested! Sad to see that we have become a violent, lawless nation! Where no one practices what they preach.

Porky Pig Monday, 08 July 2013 02:50 AM

Yes, the agenda is to get rid of the tugger in Sri Lanka which has unfortunately become a way of life.

    curious Sunday, 07 July 2013 11:17 PM

Thuggery only going to get worse when there is no law order in the country.

    GC Sunday, 07 July 2013 11:01 PM

Can someone please enlighten the readers of the meaning of the word 'Kama'? Is it Kaama (food, meal), a Sinhalisation of Karma, or just pure Lust?

Ram Perera Sunday, 07 July 2013 10:44 PM

Nothing may come out in the investigation as at the end it will be the businessman would be a supporter of the government and victim compelled to settle the matter

    wonderboy Sunday, 07 July 2013 08:42 PM

They should shut down the club permanently

Close on the heals of the hacking to death of the Estate Superintendent. International press, please copy these. It is help your nationals.

    reviewcric Monday, 08 July 2013 03:53 AM

Because being 21 means you can go to night clubs. Its an experience one generally takes. Sadly for this individual. Kama should close down. I hear the place is a boiling oven for fights.....

Calistus Jayatilleke Monday, 08 July 2013 06:21 AM

One is bound to hear of worse incidents when the much publicized Casino Street is fully functional in Colombo. For some strange reason, those who vowed to usher in a Dharma Raajya are dead silent on these projects whilst making a big hue and cry on issues such as Halal, slaughter of animals etc.

    MR Monday, 08 July 2013 05:56 AM

Kama should be closed down for good !!

    Jesus Monday, 08 July 2013 05:49 AM

Why do people visite these places

The God Father Monday, 08 July 2013 05:33 AM

    lyza Monday, 08 July 2013 03:54 AM

Well there are lot of short comings in Sri Lanka, but we are definitely not communists! Why should there be hotels in a country where 99.99% of the population can't afford them ?

    Rambo Sunday, 07 July 2013 05:43 PM

Quite sad to see that thuggery has become a norm of daily life in every part of the society right from the top to the bottom.

    lyza Monday, 08 July 2013 03:50 AM

At what age should people go to clubs? If you haven't been to them at 21, then you have had no life. If you still go to them at 31 then you definitely need a life !

    lyza Monday, 08 July 2013 03:49 AM

It's more in align with the Sanskrit word "desire", pronounced similar to "Karma" with a silent R.

Do not forget Mr.Jayathilaka, we are the wonder of Asia!!!!!!

    observer Monday, 08 July 2013 03:07 AM

Why would you own a car in a poor country where 90% of the population can’t afford one? Would u refrain from it if you could afford one yourself? The problem here is what’s legal and what’s not and most importantly whether or not justice is served!!
