A foreign national who managed to dupe several people by promising them employment opportunities in Italy has been arrested and remanded, sources at the Fraud Investigations Bureau told Daily Mirror online.
The foreigner had managed to deceive people for huge sums of money while he was staying in Sri Lanka on an expired visa. Over a dozen complaints were received against the suspect.
According to the Fraud Investigations Bureau the suspect had obtained the help of some locals and was residing at a leading Colombo apartment complex but had not been able to pay the apartment rent.
Following his arrest the suspect complained of ill health and was admitted to the prison hospital. Unit seven of the Fraud Investigations Bureau is conducting further investigations. (Daily Mirror online)
I am also a foreigner and I regret that criminal bringing a bad reputation about foreigners which are living here peacefully. To cheat locals, which are willing to leave their loved ones for some years, bearing the sometimes inhuman treatments from some Arabs, to earn some substantial amount for a better future is in my eyes one of the most bad crimes. He should be punished not only for fraud.

He may not operate on his own. Either he was put upto this by a local fraudster or he is part of a syndicate. The investigation should be widen to net all these crooks.
